Narratives of change: four inspiring reads by Flor Avelino

Do you sometimes think that societal challenges are hopelessly complex, but are you committed to make a difference? This fall DRIFT, the Transition Academy and entrepreneurial network Impact Hub Amsterdam offer a second edition of the Masterclass Societal Transitions: a 5-day intensive course, combining a theoretical perspective with critical reflection and applied action learning, to help you foster systemic impact.

In the build-up to the Masterclass, we want to inspire the bridge-builders, innovators and entrepreneurs around us. Therefore, we asked the diverse teachers of the Masterclass to send us some interesting readings and articles of their choice, in order to offer you new insights and inspiration on social innovation and societal transitions! During the masterclass, we combine a critical and theoretical perspective on sustainability transitions, social innovation and entrepreneurship, with pragmatic tools and insights in 5 thematic modules: social innovation, sustainability transitions, leadership & politics, synthesis & moving forward, and integration & application.

“The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Dr. Flor Avelino, Senior Researcher & Lecturer Sustainability Transitions at Drift, will share her knowledge on transformative social innovation, transition theory and power and empowerment in the first three modules, handing us frameworks and tools to drive the change we want to see and to construct our own narrative of change. We offer you a preview on her insights by selecting four thought-provoking reads, that reflect the scope – and questions raised- in Flors research and lectures. And do you need more summer reads? Visit the website of TRANSIT, the research project Flor is involved in as scientific coördinator and researcher, and learn about social innovation and new economy narratives in 20 translocal networks in both Europe and Latin America.
